Walk and Talk Therapy

Sitting in an office, talking about your feelings across from your therapist isn’t for everyone. Sometimes it can feel too uncomfortable to be observed. Sometimes we need movement to help process our emotions. Nature-based settings can help us co-regulate and feel grounded. For all these reasons and more, I’ve decided to offer phone-based walk-and-talk therapy sessions. Please read on to see if walk-and-talk therapy might be right for you!

How it works: With walk-and-talk therapy, you’ll be doing a solo walk, connected to me by phone. You’ll be responsible for choosing a walk, hike or nature hang in a location that is appropriate for you.

Here are some things to consider when deciding whether this form of therapy is right for you:

-Privacy: naturally, a therapy office provides complete privacy for you to express potentially difficult feelings and emotions. In the great outdoors, there is an increased risked that others may overhear our conversation, so you need to be prepared for and accept this reality. Choosing a location that is less populated is advised (even just walking/moving/gardening in your own backyard could be great!).

-Physically appropriate: Walk-and-talk therapy works best when you have relatively easy terrain to navigate, and you aren’t huffing and puffing all the way through the session (aka, it’s not the time to conquer that black diamond hiking trail!) Choose terrain that is appropriate for your fitness and skill level in order to better serve your ability to concentrate on your emotional experience and expression.

Please note: all walk-and-talk therapy clients will need to fill out a liability waiver, holding themselves responsible for any injuries that occur while walking/hiking

-Where are you at emotionally?: Sometimes, we are in a place of deep grief, fear or anger, where our emotions may need a lot of outward expression and energy from us. Are you ok with potentially crying/emoting in public? If not, you may want to choose a more private location, or choose in-person or online sessions instead to give yourself the freedom to express whatever you need to without feeling the restrictions of public spaces.
